Actually bought it this time! I was able to get the parents to sign off on it because it's more of a project than a driver. Some details: 1974 Chevy CK 2wd pickup truck. Original owner. 454 motor that was recently rebuilt (about 400 miles ago). New Turbo 400 trans with a lifetime warranty. Has a little rust in the front quarters and doors, but the frame and most of the body is solid. I got it for $2100. I think it was a pretty smokin deal. I was able to drive it up onto the trailer, and then drove it around the block a bit once I got it home. Here's some pictures. I'm more than excited.

What, no engine pics? :(

Pretty sweet! What do you have in mind for the project?

I'll grab some more tomorrow after I clean it all up. The motor aint too much to look at though (no shiny bits, which is how I like it).

For science.

Nice wheels!
I mean, nice truck and also nice wheels!
The interior looks OK even though it's a little too spartan (you are missing a pedal... :P)

Bit of a muscle truck build, but keep it a sleeper. Kind of like what Roadkill did with their muscle truck (Youtube search: Roadkill muscle truck if you havent seen it). Basically, make sure the truck will drive straight and stop well (new brakes maybe, discs all the way around possibly), maybe look into some mild suspension work (just to lower it a little bit), possibly either swap in a Ford 9 inch (I do have one sitting around) or at least a LSD. Basically, get a solid, reliable, fast drivetrain underneath it and then slowly start working on the exterior/aesthetics.
First things it needs though are new rims and tires (old tires are old). From there, look into brakes and suspension, then rear end, then engine.

Agree. But finding a manual truck is pretty tough. Plus, the stock manual 4 speed that'd be in a truck would be a brute of a trans. A tremec 5 or 6 speed swap might be in order wayyyy down the line.
And for what I want to do with it, 2wd is fine. I'm not looking to make an off-roader, I already have a 4x4 capable vehicle.

I know I know. But finding a manual truck would be tough. And the truck 4 speed would be a brute of a trans. So a fresh Turbo 400 is a nice alternative. A tremec 5 or 6 speed might be in order wayy down the line.

Congratulations. That's a great truck. I learned how to drive in my dad's '79 Chevy with a 454. That motor is an absolute monster.

As the owner of a 1972 4 speed, you shut your mouth sir!

Out of a truck? Yikes. I mean, yes it enhances the driving experience and makes everything more manly, and in a perfect world, the truck would be a manual, but for $2100, I'm happy.

Yea, and with a little work, it can really be opened up and live up to its potential.

I use to have this. 2wd, factory dual exhaust, auto. I had flowmaster 40s put on when the stock exhaust went, and Holy God was that loud. Miss that truck so much. Unfortunately oil pump stopped and I didn't notice the drop in pressure. Kablooie.

I know, cause 'murrica.
I was just joking, I would love to own one of those, I really like the squarely looks.

Well, it's still in the truck.

Right. Makes sense. Didn't know what you had from 1972. Or if you had a truck, maybe it had a muncie or something out of a car. I dont know man, there's lots of possibilities!
Whats the truck? Pics? DD or project or what? And why no posts about it?
![]() 09/06/2013 at 00:20 |

Yea, love the look. I think it'll make for a sweet sleeper/muscle truck.

Have the truck, green 1972 C/10 shortbox 4x4 with 4 speed. Been in the family for decades. I need to put a new engine in it (have the engine), mostly just need to travel up there and do it.

Bitchin. Looks similar to my set up. I think I'll have to redo the exhaust (maybe get some nice flowing headers while I'm at it) because the old exhaust is pretty rotted out.

Sounds sweet. I like the look of the '72s. More classic look, smoother lines, and a 4x4 would be cool. Is it selectable 4x4?
![]() 09/06/2013 at 00:32 |

If by selectable you mean go out in the driving snow and lock the hubs by hand, yes.

Haha yea, that's kind of what I figured. Still pretty awesome.

Need to see it in full Fall Guy regalia within 12 months.
Nice ride. Have fun.

I would suggest leaving the exterior as-is. I think it already has a great patina. I like your ideas for the drivetrain and I think you are on the right track by replacing the wheels/tires and brakes first. Hat tip to you, sir. Keep us posted.

bulletproof trucks. horribly fuel inefficient by today's standards, and if I was going that route, I'd probably go with a K5 Blazer. but, still, bulletproof trucks.
